SALERNO GATHERS FOR ST. MATTHEW MANNA RITE | SG News Every September, the Italian city of Salerno comes together around one of its most treasured Catholic traditions. On the eve of the Feast of St. Matthew, the Apostle and Evangelist who is patron of the city, clergy and faithful descend into the crypt of Salerno Cathedral for the traditional Rite of the Manna of St. Matthew. On September 20, Archbishop Andrea Bellandi of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno celebrated the solemn evening Mass at the Cathedral. Afterward, a procession carried the reliquary containing the arm of St. Matthew from the Cathedral into the crypt, where the annual manna rite took place beside the Apostle’s tomb. The tradition centers on small amounts of moisture that collect inside the ancient burial structure. Church records explain that the liquid is produced naturally through condensation caused by humidity within the tomb.
