An unusually tense, minute-long exchange between Pope Leo XIV and Argentine Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo took place after the September 2 General Audience. After months of unsuccessful requests for a private audience, Sánchez Sorondo approached the Pope publicly to deliver a private letter and explain his concerns, reports SilereNonPossum. Leo XIV appeared displeased by the encounter he had sought to avoid.

The Pope spoke at length with a bishop who then handed over a letter. Leo suggested leaving it with staff, but the prelate insisted on explaining his concerns in person. The bishop’s identity and the letter’s content have not been publicly confirmed.
Pope Leo XIV is willing to speak with Trump - but Trump has to make the call. In a July 3 interview with Piers Morgan, Louis Prevost, the pope’s older brother and an outspoken Trump supporter, said he had asked Leo XIV whether he’d speak to President Trump. Leo XIV replied: “Sure, if you want, but he has to call me.” Prevost explained: “That’s a Vatican rule. You have to request from the Pope. The Pope doesn’t go.”
