Young Angel’s Descent Marks Easter in Spain’s Tudela | Shalom World News The Spanish town of Tudela marked Easter Sunday with its traditional “Descent of the Angel”, a ceremony that brings Holy Week to a close. Thousands gathered in the Plaza de los Fueros to watch the event. This year, a seven-year-old girl, Enma Madorrán, played the role of the angel. Secured by a harness, she was lowered from the Clock House into the square, where she symbolically announced the resurrection of Jesus to the Virgin Mary. She removed the black veil covering the Virgin’s face, a sign of mourning, and the crowd welcomed the moment with applause. The ceremony dates back to the 13th century and has been held in its current form since the 1600s. The role of the angel, once limited to boys, has been open to girls since 2008.
